“Miracle” abortion survivor without legs shines as high school wrestler

Nik HootSophomore Nik Hoot is one of the top competitors in his weight class at the Woodlan Warriors. He wows on and off the mat, thanks to his technical skill and generous heart. But for him, wrestling at all is something of a miracle.
You see, Nik was targeted for death before he was born. Thanks to a gruesome legal abortion in Russia, he lost parts of both his legs and suffered deformities of his hands. But Nik has always been a fighter. He survived and was put up for adoption in 1996. Marvin and Apryl Hoot brought him to a new life in Indiana and he hasn’t ceased to amaze since.
“I know that I was supposed to be an aborted baby and it failed. It makes me angry because I never want that to happen to any kid. Anybody can become anything and getting rid of a kid like that isn’t right to me,” Nik says. “I just look at myself as a miracle and that I can accomplish a lot of things.”
And he certainly has! With prosthetic legs, he’s played nearly every sport available to him: football, baseball, basketball and of course wrestling. In addition to Nik, the Hoots have adopted five other children from foreign countries, all of whom have birth defects (and that’s on top of their three biological children).
Nic was a person then and he is a person now. We’re so thankful he’s here with us today!
